On a crisp Saturday afternoon at High Street Nazarene Church, over 20 eager Cub Scouts from Pack 131 gathered for their annual Pinewood Derby, a time-honored tradition of speed, creativity, and friendly competition. Scouts aged 7 to 10 showcased their handcrafted cars, meticulously carved from wood blocks and adorned with vibrant paints, decals, and aerodynamic designs inspired by everything from rockets to superheroes.
Parents and den leaders filled the stands, cheering as the gravity-powered racers hurtled down the 32-foot track. The heats unfolded with nail-biting drama, as top contenders vied for supremacy in the four-lane race. Standout performances included second-grader Charley Shore, whose car narrowly missed edging out her older brother Jack for 2nd and 3rd place.
In the end, Noah Fox took home the grand championship trophy, with awards also presented for Most Creative, Most Original Theme, and Fan Favorite, among others. Lots of great raffles were won, including a free week of summer camp for 3rd grader Sam Ropp! The derby wrapped up with pizza and walking tacos, setting the stage for next year's even bigger showdown.
